ecoinvent Welcomes Pharmaceuticals as a New Sector

ecoinvent v3.13, planned for release in 2026, expands both the coverage and the timeliness of our datasets. It also marks a first for the database, with pharmaceuticals added as a new sector.

 

TheOECDestimates that pharmaceuticals and medical goods account for about one-quarter of healthcare-related greenhouse gas emissions. This means decarbonizing pharmais fundamental for a sustainablehealthcare industry.Yet, the pharma data gap is especially pronounced, with generic chemical data too far removed from the sector’s operating reality. 

 

In collaboration with the Pharma LCA Consortium, ecoinvent v3.13 will introduce regionalized, PAS 2090 Product Category Rule (PCR) compliant pharmaceutical datasets to begin to fill this gap—making results more accurate, verifiable, and comparable. These datasets cover core building blocks, operational and process elements, circular solvent management,life cycleand waste management, and regionalized pharmaceutical supply chains.

 

It’s a first step toward closing a data gap the industry has long flagged.

Textiles: 

We’reseeing real movement in this sector.Ourcollaborationwith theTextile Exchangeto provideimprovedcoveragefor theapparel and footwear industryhasproducednewcotton and flaxdata for themain producing regions with new transforming activities. New datasets include conventional and organic seed-cotton production andginningdatasets, covering 70% and 80% of global production, respectively. Additionally,theAlliance for European Flax-Linen &Hemphas supplied anew dataset for therescutchingof short flaxfibreinRER.This is key for the eco-design directive delegated act, andthere’smore coming.

Paper: 

Wecontinue our productive relationship with industry associations,sharingnew activitydatasets in collaboration with theEuropean Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers, theConfederation of European Paper Industries, and theResearch Institutes of Sweden.Thenew data covers carton board, kraft paper, paper sack, and corrugated board box. It reflects current production across Europe and will help environmental professionals in the pulp and paper industriesmeasure the impact of their activities. They will also berelevant for sectors where goods are packaged using paper products. 

Electricity: 

Electricity mix datasets, which are among the most widely used parts of the database, are being updated with 2023 and 2024 statistics. 

Battery supply chains:

In our metals sector, we are expanding and updating lithium extraction. This is relevant, because lithium is a critical link between mineral extraction and the rapidly expanding battery value chain. In our fuels sector, we are regionalizing the production of Calcined Petroleum Coke(CPC) production to key geographies—another key feedstock in the battery supply chain.

 

Battery and lithium data matter well beyond the datasets themselves: they sit at the center of a fast-moving regulatory conversation, from the EU Battery Regulation to the Digital Product Passport, where credible life cycle inventory data is becoming a compliance requirement rather than a nice-to-have. The same is true for CPC, a key input across aluminum, steel, and battery-anode supply chains now facing similar scrutiny. We expect our work in these areas to keep expanding as those frameworks take shape.

The release also adds new chemical product datasets, alongside technical corrections across waste, agriculture, construction, and impact assessment methods.  

 

 

 

 

New Dataset Comparison Feature Comes to ecoQuery

Data is only as valuable as your ability to work with it. That’s why we’re also investing in usability, and one request stood out clearly in user feedback: the ability to compare datasets without switching browser tabs. 

 

Today, comparing two datasets in ecoinvent means opening each separately and switching back and forth to spot the differences. We’re building a dataset comparison feature directly into ecoQuery to fix that. From the dataset search page, users will be able to select datasets for comparison, choose which version of each to compare, and move straight to a dedicated comparison view. That view will show impact assessment results and flows side by side, with filters for LCI method, indicator, and other parameters, so the comparison adjusts to what you’re looking for.

What's Next

Beyond v3.13, we’re evaluating additional functionality improvements informed by the same kind of user and community feedback that shaped the comparison feature. We’ll share more as those plans firm up.

 

None of this is new territory for us. Expanding coverage, refining methodology, and investing in the tools built on top of the database is what we’ve done since ecoinvent began, and it’s what continues to underpin the trust our users place in the data.
